Tips & Tricks for cleaning your Waste Tanks
How to Clean Your Cassette/ Portable Toilet the BioMagic Way
Keeping your waste tank clean doesn’t have to involve harsh chemicals or complicated processes. When using BioMagic, the goal is to support the natural aerobic system that breaks down waste cleanly and odour-free. That starts with the right cleaning approach.
Below you’ll find the best BioMagic cleaning method for regular use, followed by the deep-clean instructions, recommended for when you return home or prepare your van for storage.
Switching From Other Toilet Chemicals? Start Here.
BioMagic works by supporting good bacteria and oxygen, so it must never be mixed with chemical cleaners.
If you’re transitioning from chemical-based treatments, follow these steps first:
1. Flush Out Old Chemicals
Thoroughly rinse, flood, and soak your tank to remove any remaining residues from previous chemical products.
2. Avoid All Chemical Cleaners
Steer clear of bleaches, disinfectants, toilet cleaners, sanitisers, or anything that blocks oxygen or kills beneficial bacteria.
3. Start Fresh
A clean tank ensures BioMagic performs at its best from day one. Once the chemicals are gone, BioMagic will begin restoring a healthy aerobic environment and weaponising the beneficial bacteria to accelerate the normal breakdown process.
4. Use the Correct Dose
BioMagic is highly concentrated, so a little goes a long way. Follow the label and recommend dosing for your tank size and type.
Once you’ve completed this changeover and begin using BioMagic consistently, your tank will smell cleaner, empty easier and stay healthier without needing constant maintenance on the daily.
How to Empty Your Tank and Reset for the Next Dose:
It is so important to keep a clean waste tank! A clean tank prevents any health risks or build up of gunk that prevents your system from operating efficiently.
- Empty your tank as usual at a local dump point.
- Rinse the entire tank with fresh water—no soaps, no detergents.
Make sure to flush out all contents that could adhere to the walls or roof of the tank in the emptying process. Keep everything below the liquid line or it will not be broken down and odour removed.
- Add the correct dose of BioMagic and enough fresh water to cover the bottom of the waste tank. Make sure to cover any and all ridges in the bottom of the cassette or Portable toilet.
- Don’t forget to top up your fresh water tank
- Let BioMagic do the work naturally as part of your regular usage cycle.
This emptying reset routine keeps the tank biologically balanced and odour-free, without needing any harsh cleaners.
Deep Clean at Home: Putting away into storage?
When you arrive home from travelling or before putting your van/ portable toilet into storage, it's a good time to give your cassette a full internal deep clean. This removes calcium deposits, urine scale, and stubborn internal build-up—while still keeping things BioMagic-friendly. Also leaves no surprises next trip.
1. Wash out the waste tank
- Empty the tank at a local waste tank on the way home.
- Thoroughly wash out any remaining gunk and make sure all internal surfaces are free of build up.
1. Prepare the Cassette for a deep clean
- Place the bottom tank on flat ground or surface.
- Ensure the slide is closed.
- Remove the guard covering the top of the slide area.
2. Mix Your Natural Cleaning Solution
Combine:
- 1–2 litres of white vinegar
- 1–2 litres of hot water
Pour enough into the top slide area to nearly fill it to the rim and soak for 5 minutes.
3. Begin the Deep Clean in the Waste Tank
- Once sat in the bowl for 5 minutes, gently open the slide so the solution flows into the waste tank.
- Add the remaining mixture.
- Keep the tank flat and swirl to coat all internal surfaces.
- Let it soak for 1 hour.
4. Clean Every Surface
Rotate the tank for thorough coverage:
- Lay on one side for 30 minutes.
- Flip to the opposite side for 30 minutes.
- Close the slide and turn the tank upside down for 30 minutes to soak the roof and moving parts.
5. Final Full Soak
- Stand the cassette upright on its end.
- With the vinegar solution still inside, fill the tank right to the top with water.
- Leave it to soak for 2–4 hours.
6. Rinse & Lubricate
- Empty the tank and rinse thoroughly with clean fresh water until it overflows .
- Dry the slide area.
- Lightly lubricate the slide and seals with a small amount of cooking oil and gloves. This will ensure that all moving parts stay lubricated to keep the longevity of your toilet's most used moving parts.
Then it is clean and ready to be put into storage and ready for your next adventure.
